Meme going around. The earliest I can find is a call for help in comp.sys.next on May 9, 1989. I know I was lurking for a couple of years before that. Next post was three months later to rec.arts.books. Then a bunch of rec.music.gdead. Then a very amusing (in retrospect) thread on whether alt.sources should be moderated. Man, it was a different world back then.

No, really! This was five years before the first recorded spam on Usenet. Four years before the beginning of endless September. I'm not exactly nostalgic for those days. Now is pretty cool too. But Usenet back then was the first glimpse I had into the new connected world. It was like living in a science fiction novel.
